A Small Update to Expense Tracking Spreadsheet

Based on a reader suggestion, I made a small change the 2008 Simple Expense Tracker so it is easier to understand. My apologies for the prior confusion.

For those of you that downloaded it, please replace your file with this new one: (The File: See Financial Tools).

Here’s what I changed: for consistency, I created categories for “Planned Savings” (retirement accounts like 401(k) or Roth IRA) and “Unplanned Savings” (what you have left over each month after all expenses and planned savings). In parallel, I had to modify a few formulas so the spreadsheet accounts correctly.

Here’s what it looks like now (click on image for larger preview):

And as always, please email me if you have any comments or suggestions.

  2. I love this spreadsheet – I’ve just started filling it in. The only trouble I’m having is that in google docs it’s only 52 lines long, and if I add more the formulas don’t work. I guess I’ll have to stick to a spreadsheet on my harddrive!

Thanks for all the work that must have gone into this!

  3. Emma:
That is a peculiar problem in Google docs and I’m not sure what’s going on. Also, I recommend keeping this file on the hard drive (with password protection)–it will contain a lot of personal information!
