Want to Help A Beauty Pageant Winner Run a Charity Date Auction? This is Not a Joke…

30 May 2008

This is certainly one for the law of unintended consequences.

I mentioned the idea of auctioning myself for a charity in my article on revenue equivalence to make the narration interesting. Well, lo and behold, this article has turned out to be interesting in a completely different way.

The article is why I recently received a request from a beauty pageant winner. She wants to run a charity date auction and wants advice on how to do so.

Can you help?

I know people do these things all the time in college. So, I’m asking for your help if you have run or participated in a charity date auction. Here are a few questions that come to my mind immediately:

  • How did you set it up?
  • What tips do you have about raising money?
  • How did you advertise it?
  • What rules did you put in place?
  • Did you use raffle tickets or other items to raise money and interest?

Any other information you know would be useful.

You can leave tips in the comments (anonymously if you prefer). Or, if you have more personal information, please email me and I’ll forward it along.

Why would you want to help out?

There are all sorts of good reasons, including:

  1. You’ll be supporting a charity (Children’s Miracle Network).
  2. You’ll be sharing knowledge.
  3. You have the chance to help someone who might become Miss America.
  4. This would make an excellent cocktail party story.

Who is the person?

  2. Had the pleasure of helping friends run an ubersuccessful charity date auction for their Leukemia Team In Training fundraiser. Luckily it was in SF before the dot-com bust and featured plenty of philanthropically minded folks.

Both men and women, being non-sexist– and we had both sexes bidding (this being SF) for me the beauty of the auction was in watching several of these shy individuals who were not the beauty queen types to realize that they were beautiful material! Coaching and prepping the candidates was crucial to the success of the event!!

A beauty queen from Australia did participate and she did fetch a hefty sum of donations after a nice auction style bidding war among the audience.

She was humble too and she offered to do more than one date to increase the proceeds for the worthy cause! She helped us to remember that it was not all about her beauty and popularity but that every individual participating and building community is what made our auction/pageant-style game a success she got us all up and dancing and partying!

wow. thx for asking this question. (making sure that the cash and donations were collected turned into a big job too by the way)
