Some say you must find something you love even if it has less money because your career is tied to your identity. Others say work is "just a job" and a money making tool--your career doesn't have to be defined in the office... I'm somewhere in the middle. On the one hand I am all about limiting work only to jobs that allow a reasonable lifestyle. Then to choose among these jobs, money can be a big factor. It's a way to strike a balance between work that pays and work that you enjoy. There are many viewpoints on the career and happiness connection. I argue with people about this all the time, but I can see differing perspectives. Some people need social status to feel successful. Well the United States is rated number 16 in terms of personal happiness... Other "Western" countries who produce less than us but have similar freedoms and liberties are rated "happier" I think it has something to do with the American work week and the insatiable need to consume (like you mentioned above-- make the money and spend it on pretty things to impress people). I think it has something to do with the American work week and the insatiable need to consume (like you mentioned above– make the money and spend it on pretty things to impress people).
