Our Crummy trust works great. For 25 years the children have understood and left the money alone. We saved a lot of taxes. However, when our duaghter married it was quite a feat to talk our son-in-law to leave the money alone. We had to use the grim trigger.

Very useful article. Since, I'm a parent, I'm familiar with the grim trigger strategy (though I didn't know the name), but the Crumney trust part was very informative.

Mgccl:
Funny how your dad's strategy affected how other people act--this is the essence of game theory...

Mahesh:
This is a nice point. Businesses respond to how people would normally act. I find companies are frightened of losing profitable, lifelong customers so they take pre-emptive steps like improving customer service.

The grim trigger strategy is used subtly by folks in business. Let us say you mess you up once, that memory is used to eliminate you or your products and services as a choice. This has implications in choice theory. People making decisions for better or worse use it like in the case of not buying a company that misses it earnings guidance once for ever.
