This article might be useful for websites hosting adverts from an auction via an intermediairy. For example adverts from Google Adsense.

The number of adverts that Google Adsense allows on a single page is limited: there is a maximum number for each advert type. Often the optimum is hosting less adverts than this maximum imposed by Google.

Advertising companies often manually select the websites they want to advertise on. Then they place bids. By limiting the amount of advertising space on popular pages you stimulate them to place higher bids.

In fact the maximum number of adverts on a page set by Google is already an attempt to make extra profit by reducing the supply.

I have one doubt regarding the students' game theory. At the end ,suppose 1$ is the least they could get, will the probability of a student getting rejected not remain the same as before i.e 1/26 ??since all the students reduce their price to 1$...

Yes, the students might coordinate as Mark W. suggests. The students play the role of the common man against the monopoly of black cards, so perhaps this is similar to what labor unions do against powerful companies.

Paul: I laughed out loud when I read this one. Of course let's remind ourselves of the other side. In marriages both sides can play games of power.

this game theory reminds me of social relationships. Women hold all the blacks, and men the reds. Women can and do withhold supply through various means, resulting in men doing a race to the bottom bidding war.

Women of prime breeding age can do (soft) polygamy, mate with older, richer men, divorce and and do the single mom thing, get fat, get tattoos, become slutty, etc. The effect is an apparent shortage of desirable women, even when the numbers are 50/50.

I really like the analogy you made here with your friend's job and the card game. It's a good intro to the game theory here.
"The only stipulation is that the students can’t get together and bargain as a group with Adam" was key here in my estimation. It reminded me of powerful lobbies in DC that don't have that stipulation and leave the individual at a severe disadvantage to say the least.
