Abhishek, Charlene, and guy: I also wonder why people wait 1 hour to eat at a breakfast restaurant when such foods take no more than 30 minutes to prepare, eat, and clean! One of the worst examples is people going out to eat pancakes, which is an easy mixture of flour, liquids and fat. And yet, people are willing to dress up, drive, wait, and pay 10 times more for the luxury of someone else making pancakes for them. I once saw pancake batter in a tube in a supermarket. I think this is a clear sign of the end of western civilization... :)

numericalexample: Interesting perspective. I always considered U.S. to be relatively expensive on prepared foods. My comparison was India.

I think in the US it is cheaper to buy restaurant food with reasonable quality than in Europe. In the US supermarkets are often open 24x7 and therefore they are much more expensive than in Europe. I wonder why Americans apparently go to the supermarket in the middle of the night when they have so many restaurants.

Cooking with unprocessed food is of course much healthier than buying processed food from restaurants or supermarkets. If you eat healthy hygienically cooked food you probably save a lot of time and costs in the long run.

When I was in the US it seemed that eating in restaurants definitely had a short term advantage, at least if you go to a restaurant nearby without any waiting time.

most restaurants have lousy food. It's heavily processed, with an abundance of salt, sugar, fats, often lard or hydrogenated fats. One big problem is that unprocessed ingredients, including fresh fruits and veggies are very labor intensive and spoil quickly. Labor doesn't scale, and so its something to be minimized in order to maximize profits.

Well said. You could also say that in the time you're taking to cook, you've developing skills and a better understanding of food. Skills you would not have otherwise acquired by ordering from a menu and paying for it.

Completely agree with you. Besides, cooking is an art and could be fun to experiment sometimes... also waiting for food at the restaurant somehow makes me restless, but helping my mother in the kitchen doesn't. :)
