How to catch a baseball during batting practice using game theory – Youtube video

I have never caught a baseball during batting practice. I got really, really close once in the Oakland Coliseum but I lost out to a competing fan. Perhaps my problem was strategy, or lack thereof.

Longtime reader William Spaniel once caught four balls, and his trick was using game theory. William has a knack for applying game theory to such practical problems, as he once also found cheap gas using game theory.

Check out his four-minute Youtube video with suggestions on how to improve your odds. I love how he analyzes the equilibrium using math and then uses a bit of psychology to give his game theoretic suggestion.

Now this is a real world application of mathematics!

I like this calculation, not sure that I would describe it as an equilibrium, since many people are not that interested in catching balls if it means sitting the cheap seats.
I wonder if there are any online games which also show this tendency – the failure of udpating – under x people makes sense to do y, while over x it makes sense to refrain from y- but people remain indifferent to x when calculating.
