A joke about why you shouldn’t make fun of co-workers

There are times where you might want to burn bridges.

But often it’s better to play it safe and avoid confrontation. Below is a short joke someone sent me illustrating why.

The joke

Employed by the human-resources center of a company, my friend trains employees in proper dress codes and etiquette.

One day as she was stepping onto the elevator, a man casually dressed in jeans and a golf shirt got on with her.

Thinking of her responsibilities, she said, “Dressed a little casually today, aren’t we?”

The man replied, “Yup…it’s one of the perks you get when you own the company.”

In this case, the friend should be fine.
If the company hires somebody to coach employees on dress, then they most likely have an incentive to keep their employees looking professional. Therefore, being an “activist” HR person may in fact reflect positively.
It is possible, I suppose, that the owner might decide that the dress code isn’t needed, but that seems less likely based on a single encounter.

That being said, I usually take the advice to heart and treat everyone as if they might be my bridge to safety, at least until repeatedly proven otherwise.

A little sensitive about your “joke”, huh?
